Crossroads at Old World Wisconsin

Crossroads at Old World Wisconsin

How did it get so late so soon.
It’s night before it’s afternoon.
December’s here before it’s June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?

Dr. Seuss

Ah, the shortest day of the year. Cloudy, cold, gray outside.

Lots of lights are on inside though, for today only I’m ignoring the electric meter. The lights on the tree are glowing – all those bright LEDs in their sapphire blues, and ruby reds and emerald greens. They truly look like jewels.

Outside looks rather like the above photograph. But the photograph I’m keeping safely tucked inside my mind looks rather like the following one:

Lights like Tiny Jewels

Lights like Tiny Jewels

Ah, that is so much better!

December Fog

December Fog

Madison has already had 35 inches of snowfall, and until today most of it was on the ground. Then a warm front moved in and a heavy fog settled on everything. Now there are bare patches of muddy earth peeking from the patches of snow.  But it made for a fun afternoon of photography.

Until the rain began to pour.

Credo at Christmas

by Bo on 12/22/2008

Capitol in Lights

Capitol in Lights

“At Christmas time I believe the things that children do:

I believe with English children that holly placed in windows will protect our homes from evil.
I believe with Swiss children that the touch of edelweiss will charm a person with love.
I believe with Italian children that La Befana is not an ugly doll but a good fairy who will gladden the heart of all.
I believe with Greek children that coins concealed in freshly baked loaves of bread will bring good luck to anyone who finds them.
I believe with German children that the sight of a Christmas tree will lessen hostility among adults.
I believe with French children that lentils soaked and planted in a bowl will rekindle life in people who have lost hope.
I believe with Dutch children that the horse Sleipner will fly through the sky and fill the earth with joy.
I believe with Swedish children that Jultomte will come and deliver gifts to the poor as well as to the rich.
I believe with Finnish children that parties held on St. Stephen’s Day will erase sorrow.
I believe with Danish children that the music of a band playing from a church tower will strengthen humankind.
I believe with Bulgarian children that sparks from a Christmas log will create warmth in human souls.
I believe with American children that the sending of Christmas cards will build friendships.
I believe with all children that there will be peace on earth.” ~Daniel Roselle

Field Plow

by Bo on 12/31/2007

Plow once of the field
Contentedly sits in snow
Resting and rusting

The last day of 2007, a year of good but hard work, and today – a day to rest before the new year begins.

Oaks in Winter

by Bo on 12/28/2007

Oak trees hold tight to their leaves
refuse to acknowledge
the passing of autumn
and stand stalwart in the snow,
awaiting spring.

Bus Stop Bench

by Bo on 12/18/2007

Oh, the weather outside is frightful
A snow plow would be delightful.
But the white is sure pretty, so . . .
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

We love snow in Wisconsin. But if we could dig out just enough to sit on the bench before we board the bus, it would be nice.

Madison, Wisconsin – 25.5 inches of snow in December and counting. More to come 3 out of the next 5 days.

BTW. The city is out of money for plowing and sanding the streets for the rest of the year. Hope it doesn’t snow on December 24th.

Copper Planter with Snow

by Bo on 12/16/2007

There are 16 of these huge planters flanking the doors of the Wisconsin State Capitol Building, and the state fathers are most kind and budget money for lovely flowers to decorate our Capitol. In spring the planters are filled with tulips, in summer, pink petunias and in fall, lovely yellow chrysanthemums. But in winter, Mother Nature gets in the act and she fills the containers with lovely mounds of snow. (No charge!)
