My first wildflower of the season. The wildflowers seem late this spring, and during my walk deep in the woods this morning I found only the foliage of the anemone and hepatica. Usually both are blooming by the last two weeks in April. But I did discover a few bloodroot, just beginning to bloom. This tiny flower is still wrapped gently in its leaf–like a dainty maiden with a shawl wrapped protectively around her shoulders.
The plant is native to the southern half of Wisconsin, and a few counties in the northern part as well. It usually blooms in April and May, in woods or the edges of woods. The plant was called bloodroot because it has deep red sap that was used by Native Americans as a dye.

“Simplicity is the core of wabi-sabi. Nothingness is the ultimate. But before and after nothingness, simplicity is not so simple.” Leonard Koren
Wabi-sabi asks that the essence is pared down, but not stripped of its poetry and emotional warmth. That which binds the meaningful into a whole remains intact. Wabi-sabi does not lessen the quality that compels one to look at something, and then look again and again.

Memory is the best of all gardens. Therein, winter and summer, the seeds of their past lie dormant, ready to spring into instant bloom at any moment the mind wishes to bring them to life. ~ Hal Boyle

Not every day one comes upon a green, flamingo painted cow standing in a Wisconsin farm field.
So I guess today would be the day!

Just west of Madison I came upon a friendly winter sight – the biggest snowman I’ve ever seen, complete with four tractor and truck tires for a hat and red Wisconsin Badger “we’re # 1″ foam gloves. Guessing this snow guy is about 25 feet high and 15 feet wide.
This is considered entertainment of the highest sort in our wintry land. Great smile on the guy, hmm?
Anyone ever see a bigger snowman???
Hey the sun finally decided to shine, and Mr. Snowman looks even more grand with a few highlights.
And a reader sent me a link for the BIGGEST snowman, which happens to be a snowlady. Gotta share this – the snowlady even has skis for eyelashes. Now how sweet is that. (Figures. She ‘s from another wintery state – Maine.)
